Germany is a federal state in Central Europe. It consists since 1990 of 16 countries and is constituted as a free democratic and social constitutional state. The Federal Republic of Germany is the most recent form of the German nation-state. Germany has 83 million inhabitants and, with an average of 232 inhabitants per km², is one of the most densely populated territorial states.
Nine states border Germany, it has a share of the North Sea and Baltic Sea in the north and the Alps in the south. It lies in the temperate climate zone and has sixteen national parks and over one hundred nature parks. Berlin is the federal capital and the most populous German city. Further metropolises with more than one million inhabitants are Hamburg, Munich and Cologne, the largest conurbation is the Ruhr area, Frankfurt am Main is of international importance as a German financial centre.
Germany is a founding member of the European Union and its most populous country. Together with 18 other EU member states, it forms a monetary union, the Eurozone. It is a member of the UN, the OECD, the OSCE, NATO, the G7, the G20 and the Council of Europe. The Federal Republic of Germany is regarded as one of the most politically influential states in Europe and is a sought-after partner country on a global level.
